The King in Yellow

The King in Yellow… drawing comparisons to the Cthulhu mythos now, well let’s say the King of the white wine grapes – so we don’t have to mix things up with Robert W. Chambers and H.P. Lovecraft.

Once or twice each year, we are holding a small Riesling Battle. It started out as a fun battle between Rieslings from Alsace and Germany, as I have a friend that really loves German Rieslings and I adore the sublime perfectness you find in Riesling from Alsace – have been there several times, and personally I think, that the Alsace Riesling is superior to most other Rieslings in the world (biased as hell).

This seating was a bit different, not the usual battle, but tasting Rieslings from Clare Vally (Australia), California, Austria and Piesport (Germany) and Pfalz (Germany).

The wines and the verdict:

Geyerhof Riesling “Johannisberg” 2015 (Riesling from Austria) – This is big in the nose, almost vulgar, lots of exotics fruits like pineapples and mango in the nose. The exotic fruits are backed in the nose by elder flowers. The taste is voluminous, big and bold, with allot of sweetness and a faint acidic taste. This is not a classic Riesling, well not if you like it to be trocken/dry /clean/crisp – but guess allot of people like this. I have scored it 84/100, still love it allots.

Kung Fu Girl 2014 (Riesling from California) – This is a straight forward Riesling, with a lovely dry crisp nose, faint pineapples and Mirabelle plums, it is all packed within a lovely acidity. The taste continues as the nose – it’s a simple wine, but will work perfect in the summertime. The score is 82/100.

Monsters, Monsters, Attack 2014 (Riesling from Clare Vally) – This nights biggest surprise, the nose is big with faint kerosene and green apples. Fresh dry clean Riesling that just delivers a superb experience. Only problem, normally it takes ages before the kerosene shows in high end Rieslings from Mosel and Alsace, so are we talking about and engineered wine here? Well, I still love it; the score is 87/100.

Watervale Riesling 2015 (Riesling from Clare Vally) – Probably this nights biggest disappointment, a fresh Riesling filled with apples, flowers and very dry with some acidity. Not very good intergraded wine, it tries, but it is not that good. The score ends around 76-78/100.

Von Winning Forst U500 Riesling 2012 (Riesling from Pfalz) – What! An explosion in the nose, this is big in anything – you get lots of pineapples, exotic fruits, sweetness and a bit slate (stony something), there is and underlayer of acidity. When you taste it, it bombards your palates and feels like and explosion of taste – you will find the same things in the taste, as in the nose. Love at first sight with this big, bold, bountiful and beautiful Riesling from Winning – the score is 92/100.

Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese GG, Trocken 2012 (Riesling from Piesport) – The nose is grassy with peaches and a big sweetness. Maybe a bit acidity, but it is far away. The taste is more balanced between acidity and sweetness. The score is 80/100.

Geyerhof Riesling “Spinzenberg” 2015 (Riesling from Austria) – Wow, citrus, lime, limestone and slate, wonderful acidity in the nose. The taste is a bit of a letdown compared to the nose, it still deliver a good acidity, but not much else. Score 78/100.
